I tried unchecking JavaScript, but my browser could barely operate w/o it!! I have completely emptied my Safari history and restarted several times. So I thought I was in the clear.īut now that these spontaneous downloads have started, I am wondering. Several subsequent scans of my entire drive with ClamXAV (AND a free copy of Bit Defender) have failed to detect any viruses or malware. Using ClamXAV, I deleted the quarantined trojan and emptied the trash. Examining the ClamXAV report, it had quarantined "-3". Shortly prior to this starting, while browsing a very familiar Irish new site (Irish Central, which has a lot of ads that I never look at including some trashy celebrity gossip ones), when I clicked on a news article, I got a spontaneous download and my ClamXAV went nuts! I got a warning that I an "infection" had been identified and quarantined. It has even happened from the Google search page while I was entering a search term. It occurs on seemingly any website at random while I'm browsing. ![]() I have NOT opened any of these, but scanning them with ClamXAV reveals "no infection." I have deleted them and emptied the Trash each time. If you ever share files with Windows users, or just want to make sure you're not going to fall foul of a Mac malware uprising if it ever comes into being, then ClamXav is a great occasional use scanner.Safari on my MBP 13" (mid-2019, running updated Mojave & Safari 12.12) has suddenly (last 24 hrs) started spontaneously downloading 1 or 2 files named "f.txt.js" to my download folder. ![]() While ClamXav may not be the fastest scanner on the block, it's free, gets the job done, and most importantly, won't bog your system down. Virus definition updates are of course free, and you can get ClamXav to update when you first start the program or on a set schedule. ![]() You can define file exclusions and even save your favorite scan locations for frequent scanning tasks. You get a Services menu option, which allows you to scan files as and when, be it that PDF you just downloaded or your entire disc. Thanks to the ClamAV antivirus engine, ClamXav will detect both Mac and Windows threats and remove them quickly and easily. Just because a potentially infected file goes totally unnoticed on your Mac, doesn't mean it's not going to wreak havoc on your poor unsuspecting friend's Windows box.ĬlamXav is the Mac GUI variant of the open source ClamAV project, and has recently entered the Mac App Store, making it even easier to get on-demand protection. While you may or may not need a virus scanner on a Mac, there's no harm in having one that you can run as and when, perhaps if you're sending a file to a Windows using colleague for instance. Antivirus on a Mac might be a touchy subject, but if you'd like the reassurance of a virus scanner that's not intrusive and can be called on-demand, then the free ClamXav is a great choice. ![]()
